Conversion Formulas

Troy ounces and troy pounds are not used very often, but due to their similarities to standard pound and standard ounce, they can cause issues and misunderstandings - this can be costly since troy ounces and even troy pounds are still used almost exclusively for weighing precious metals like gold, platinum, silver and similar.

Conversion of standard ounces and pounds to troy ounces and pounds and back is an easy one because all these are units of mass, with fix ratio between these them.

The Troy Ounce (oz t) is defined as:

1 Troy Ounce (oz t) = 480 grains

The grain itself is defined as "ideal cereal seed" and standardized to:

1 grain = 64.79891 mg = 0.06479891 grams

Thus, the relation between grams and Troy Ounces is:

1 Troy Ounce (oz t) = 480 * 0.06479891 = 31.1034768 grams

1 gram = 0.0321507 oz t

Since the relation between standard ounce and grams is:

1 standard ounce (oz) = 28.3495 grams (g)

1 gram (g) = 0.035274 standard ounces (oz)

we can also write:

1 Troy Ounce (oz t) = 1.09714 Standard Ounce (oz)

Also, standard pound (lb) and ounce (oz) are defined as:

1 pound (lb) = 16 ounces = 0.45359237 kg = 7000 grains

1 ounce (oz) = 0.0283495 kg = 28.3495g = ~437.5 grains

But, the relation between a troy ounce and troy pound is a little bit different:

1 troy pound = 12 troy ounces = 373.24172 grams = 5760 grains

Thus:

1 troy pound (lb t) = 5760 / 7000 pounds (lb) = 0.822857 pounds (lb) = 373.2417216 grams

Remember, there are 16 standard ounces in a standard pound and 12 troy ounces in a troy ounce!

Note: there is also a unit called pennyweight (dwt, short for Denarius (an ancient Roman coin) Weight) equal to:

1 dwt = 24 grains = 1/20 troy ounce = 1/240 troy pound = 1.55517384 grams

But, the pennyweight is a little bit beyond the scope of this article.

Since the conversion from the standard ounces and pounds to Troy ounces and Troy pounds and back, is a conversation of well-defined mass units, the actual conversion is very simple.

Conversion Examples

Note: since there is very little difference between "oz" and "oz t" we will write Troy Ounce instead of "oz t" as often as we can.

If You have a gold bar that weighs 50 grams that would be:

M = 50 / 31.1034768 = 1.60753 Troy Ounces

Similarly, if You have 10 Troy ounces, that would be:

M = 10 Troy ounces = 10 * 31.1034768 = 311.034768 grams

Standard ounce vs. troy ounce

As said before:

1 Standard Ounce (oz) = 28.3495 grams (g)

1 Troy Ounce (oz t) = 31.1034768 grams (g)

Thus:

1 Troy Ounce (oz t) = 1.09714 Standard Ounce (oz)

and:

1 Standard Ounce (oz) = 0.9114607 Troy Ounce (oz t)

Standard pound vs. troy pound

As said before:

1 Pound (lb) = 0.45359237 kg

1 Troy Pound (lb t) = 0.37324172 kg

Thus:

1 Troy Pound (lb t) = 0.822857142 Pounds (lb)

and:

1 Pound (lb) = 1.215277777 Troy Pounds (lb t)

How many troy ounces are in a pound of gold?

If You have the weight of gold given in pounds, and You want to know how many troy ounces is that, first find out if the weight is given in standard pounds (lb) or troy pounds (lb t).

For example, if You have 5 (standard) pounds (lb) of gold, that would be:

M = 5 pounds = 5 * 1,215277777 = 6,07638 Troy Pounds = 2.267962 kg = 80 oz = 72.91656 oz t

Note: the accuracy of these calculations depends on the number of decimals used.

So, if You have 5 standard pounds of gold, that would be 72.916 Troy Ounces.

But, what if You have 5 Troy Pounds (lb t) of gold? In that case:

M = 5 Troy Pounds = 5 * 0.822857142 = 4.11428571 pounds = 65.82857136 oz = 60 oz t = 1.8662086 kg

So, if You have 5 troy pounds of gold, that would be 60 oz t - if You can choose between 5 pounds of gold and 5 troy pounds of gold, go for 5 (standard) pounds of gold :)

How many troy ounces are in a pound of silver?

Pounds, troy pounds, ounces, and troy ounces are units of mass - one ounce of gold has the same mass as one ounce of silver, so feel free to use the same formulas regardless of the precious metal that You have.

Also, if You wonder how many ounces are in a troy pound and/or how many troy ounces are in a troy pound use the same formulas and calculate the required values.
